Life at Dell 2017
Life at Dell 2017 Discover life at Dell from our employees who are leading the way towards innovation and digital transformation. To stay up to date on all the latest Dell job openings and upcoming events, be sure to head to their page and hit follow One of the biggest challenges in alfruchtwein all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female pl umber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the wertmiger zuwachs of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h 2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive inn ovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25 . Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

14 Conversational Skills You Can Easily Learn and Apply at Work
14 Conversational Skills You Can Easily Learn and Apply at Work14 Conversational Skills You Can Easily Learn and Apply at Work Making conversation at the office can be awkward. Stay all business and you risk coming across as a buttoned-up, stuffy person who doesnt know how to cut loose. Too nice? You might find yourself taken for granted or even passed over for promotions . And if your conversations are too casual, you may find that youre not taken seriously. How do you strike the perfect balance when making workday chat? When it comes to office chatter, there are a few simple best practices you should observe. We naturally like people who are interested in us. Open conversations with a question, and then genuinely pay attention to the answer. A simple Hows your day going? goes a long way.Casual banter and humor may not fly in a formal setting. Ditto for an overly serious attitude at a workdistribution policy that embraces a mora casual tone. The office is one place whe re you want to fit in.Its cool if you let your co-workers know that you love your dog, or that you like to skydive on the weekends, but leave more charged topics like religion and politics alone.Yes, bad things happen at work, but that doesnt mean you have to have a negative mindset. Keep your tone positive by focusing on solutions instead of grumbling about problems.Office gossip will almost always come back to haunt you. When someone shares private information with you, be sure to keep their confidence. And whatever you do, dont badmouth management or your colleagues.Make it a rule to listen more often than you talk. The more insight you gain into your colleagues and the general vibe of your office environment, the more relevant and meaningful things youll have to say when its your turn to speak.Conversing with office mates who share the saatkorn rung of the corporate ladder is one thing, but the dynamic changes when youre talking to someone higher up. All of the tips we just p rovided are still in play (you werent really going to talk politics with your manager , were you?), but there are a few more you should observe to keep things professional.Dale Carnegie was right - the secret to being liked is to show an interest in others. But mind that you keep the topics professional. How was your fishing trip? is a great question. Were you as drunk as you looked at the club this weekend? . . . not so much.Chat with your senior colleagues when you know theyre not in a hurry, like when youre both heading to grab a cup of coffee. Match the topic to the length of time at hand. Asking something like How did you get into this field of work? might be an appropriate conversation-starter at an office dinner function, but its not well-suited for a two-minute break at the water cooler.Have an idea for improving the quality of your social media analytics? Dont present that during a thirty-second elevator ride. Instead, consider using email or other office channels to schedule a meeting. Otherwise, your ideas may get lost in the shuffle or, worse, youll come across as a pest.No one likes the colleague whos doing everything short of jumping up and down, shouting Look at me Look at me to stay on the bosss radar.Once more, the rules change a bit when youre making conversation with someone you directly manage . Now youre in a position where you need to command respect, and that applies even in casual settings. Heres how.If it comes naturally, use humor to make yourself more approachable. Just keep it office-appropriate. Remember, youre setting the tone for everyone else.Even the most casual banter with a senior colleague can feel intimidating when its one-on-one. Consider inviting others into the mix to ease the tension and help everyone feel comfortable .Keep your chatty questions neutral. Its fine to ask whether your employee had a nice time on vacation, but when you ask about their relationships with their significant others, youre straying into personal territory. Would you feel comfortable answering if your employee asked you the same question? Its helpful to praise individual performance-related wins that you might only mention cumulatively on a performance review . (Good job on the presentation this morning Your PowerPoint chops are becoming legendary.) They can provide confidence boosts that increase morale.Whatever your hierarchy in the office jungle, making conversation is a matter of applying a combination of empathy (chat like youd like to be chatted to), good observation skills and a little common sense. This article was originally published on Grammarly . NEC codes identify a non-rating wide skill, knowledge, aptitude, or qualification that must be documented to identify both people and billets for management purposes. For example, if a Navy police officer ( MA Master at Arms ) receives specialized training as a K-9 Dog Handler, he/she would be awarded NEC MA-2005. Oil and Water Dont Mix Thanks to Ultraviolet Light
Oil and Water Dont Mix Thanks to Ultraviolet Light Oil and Water Dont Mix Thanks to Ultraviolet Light Oil and Water Dont Mix Thanks to UV LightGareth McKinley, school of engineering professor of teaching innovation at MIT, was part of a gruppe fascinated with trying to come up with superior ways to separate oil from water, a function that is critical in the oil and petroleum industry. Now he believes theyve found a method that just might be a game-changer for oil rigs and beyond, with light ultraviolet to be specific paving the way.Keep Them SeparatedWhen you produce oil from reservoirs that are not brand new you typically have to do enhanced oil recovery, McKinley explains, describing the ways companies extract as much of the oil from a field as possible. One of the ways is pushing vast amounts of water underground. A mature reservoir might produce five to seven gallons of water for every gallon of oil youd produce. It doesnt come out nicely but as emulsifier mixture, like taking v inaigrette and shaking it upthen gravity comes in and oil rises and water sinks.McKinleys team wanted increased control of wettability surfaces. We used fine mesh for one phase where you go through and another phase where its repelled. You can either let water through and repel oil or vice versa. You lock holes in mesh over time and end up eventually with clogging. Our paper thinks about trying to make surfaces that not only let one phase through and prevent another phase, but if they get an impurity or clogging can you use radiating light to clean it or get rid of the impurity?A new system developed by MIT engineers could make it possible to control the way water moves over a surface, using only light. Image Jose-Luis Olivares/MITThe UV EffectUltraviolet light is the highest radiation energy you can think of that is easy to access, McKinley says. So if you put UV on something in sterilized water it can be used to clean surfaces, he says. The novel thing we did is to use photocatalys isthe photocatalytic effect. To make it more efficient, we used nanoparticles of titania. What we were using was TiO2 to interact with UV light and produce free radicals which would degrade the oil on the surface. Now we would call this multifunctional membraneyou separate oil and water but also, if you shine light on it, then it would degrade oil and clean itself. The problem with titania is that it only works well with the very highest energy part of the sun spectrum and only four percent of sunlight is there, according to McKinley. What we tischset out to do is figure out the way to harness the rest of the solar spectrum, he says. The way we did this was by using dye to absorb blue light or the higher energy part of spectrum and emit it as a lower part of the spectrum. So if we see red dye its because it is absorbing all of the blue light and emitting in the red part of spectrum.Separate oil and water and oil can be used eventually in a refinery and water can be reused to get more oil out of the ground, he offers. Thats a big application here but a side part of it because now you have a surface that responds to light, he says. Also, if they shine light on one side of the drop and not on the other side, it changes the property of the drop. If we change that, we show on the side with the lower contact angle that there is a pulling force that pulls force in that direction, he says.By doing this, we can shine light on that surface and the drop will move in that direction now. That means we have a way to do this without even touching a surface, so, on a fundamental science level, we can put a light on the surface and move droplets around. The possibilities from it are if you have a chemical reaction then you can use each droplet as a chemical reactor but we were interested because we want to coalesce dropswe want them to merge together. Finally, McKinley says it also allows for another kind of water to be in the fold. When youre talking about being in sea water, it s a real challenge to find a system that worked with it, he says. It was a great moment to figure out the right dye to use to make it work when one phase is seawater and another phase is oil.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Now we would call this multifunctional membraneyou separate oil and water but also, if you shine light on it, then it would degrade oil and clean itself.Prof. Gareth McKinley, MIT
